West Nile Virus

The US is in the middle of it's worst outbreak of West Nile ever.

So I got to wondering where is all of this West nile anyways? On the internet I found west nile maps and stats The url is diseasemaps.usgs.gov The Number one state with West Nile
by a long shot, is Texas. Texas has 733 cases. Mississippi is next with 98 cases. But Texas? West Nile is spread by mosquitos. I thought Texas was in drought. Maybe God is punishing those texas republicans. Either that or they've got a pond behind the shack. Or too many old tires out back. Illinois was fourteenth on the list with 21 cases. But I live in Chicago. The Chicago Police have a ban on mosquitos. Last night I walked over to the farmers market and not a single bite. In Chicago we don't worry about mosquitos. Getting shot yes. Mosquitos no.

Blue Moon

Today's featured music is Blue Moon by the Marcels. It's in honor of Friday night's Blue moon. And no the moon won't be blue. A Blue moon is the second full moon in a calendar month. They don't happen very often. Hence the term, "Once in a Blue Moon." This will be the first blue moon since march of 2010. If it's cloudy in your neighborhood you can see the Blue Moon on the internet. The Slooh Space Camera will broadcast the moon starting at 6pm. Sign into the feed at url: events.slooh.com The Slooh broadcast will honor Niel Armstrong. Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon. Coincidentally Neil Armstrongs funeral is tomorrow. Rest in peace Neil Armstrong.

Chicago Gun Violence

On twitter this mornings I found these tribune headlines.

Colorado shooting families blast fundraising charities. Cops wound gunman after fatal shooting in Gresham neighborhood. Yesterday Facebook friend Jerry posted. Afraid of Belfast on the 12th of July. "I'm from the South Side of Chicago -- I'll be safer in Belfast." So I got to thinking. How did we get here? In 1783 An american army comprised largely of militias chased the english back to england. In 1791 congress passed the Second amendment to the constitution. The second amendment guaranteed americans the right to bear arms in support of militias. In 1920 congress passed the eightheenth amendment starting prohibition. In 1933 To stem the lawlessness of prohibition the eighteenth amendment was repealed. In 1934 and 38 new federal firearms laws were enacted. In 2008 and 2010 new Supreme Court interpretations bolstered the second ammendment and dramatically diminished the authority of state and local governments to limit gun ownership. And here it 2012. Last weekend in Chicago 46 people were shot. Nine fatally. Congress has reacted to gangsterism in the past. History repeats itself.

Street Art Jumped The Shark

When street art started it was really cool.

Banksy was doing his thing in London. Space invader was plastering up his little tiles. Obey was posting little handbills on traffic poles. But then it started becoming comercial. Then the hats started coming out. And now street art has completely jumped the shark. Microsoft has a new add campaign for surface. It's their new tablet. Which looks pretty cool. I guess it makes sense. Advertisting is temporary. Exactly like street art.
